The 5th instar caterpillar closely resembles the 4th instar. The only noticeable change is the more prominent yellow transverse band connecting the 3rd pair of thoracic spines, and the basal ends of the first two pairs of thoracic spines and the anal pair turning white. The 3rd pair of the thoracic spine is almost completely white with the basal end circled in alternating black and yellow. Life History Common Bluebottle
