Caterpillar constructs its cage cocoon of setal hairs and suspends itself in a hammock of silk. Hair loss is not complete but extensive. The partially depilated caterpillar rests after cocoon construction and no movement is discernible for a few hours although physiological preparations are clearly occurring invisibly.

These cage-cocoons represent a fundamental derivation of lepidopteran metamorphosis. Although the use of setal hairs to create protective defences for pupation is not unique to the genus.
