Hodgson’s Hawk-Cuckoo

The Hodgson’s Hawk-Cuckoo (Hierococcyx nisicolor) is a medium-sized, shy cuckoo species found across South and Southeast Asia. It is named after the British naturalist Brian Houghton Hodgson and is best known for its “hawk-like” appearance and its unique survival strategy as a brood parasite.

Appearance: Adults have slate-grey upperparts and white underparts with rufous-orange blotches and streaks on the breast. They feature a distinct yellow eye-ring and a grey tail with four black bands.

Deceptive Behavior: As a brood parasite, it lays its eggs in the nests of other birds, such as niltavas and babblers. To ensure its survival, the chick evicts the host’s biological offspring.

“Wing Gape” Strategy: To trick foster parents into bringing more food, the chick displays gape-coloured patches of skin under its wings that resemble additional hungry mouths.

Vocalisation: Known as the “Whistling Hawk-Cuckoo,” its call is a shrill, piping sequence of high-pitched whistles that often rises in a crescendo.

Distribution: It breeds in the Himalayas, northeast India, and southern China. During the winter, it migrates to Southeast Asia, including Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia.

Paracritheus trimaculatus

Paracritheus trimaculatus is a distinctive stink bug (shield bug) known for the three prominent, white-yellow spots on its back, making it look like it has a face, commonly found in Southeast Asia (like Singapore, Malaysia) feeding on plant sap, especially on skunk vine fruits. As a true bug (Hemiptera, Pentatomidae family), it sucks plant juices, and while generally harmless to humans, it’s part of the insect world and occasionally spotted in natural areas.

Our Idea Came to Life

Our Idea came to Life

Starting from The Great Makeover Project, facilitated by Secondsguru under the aegis National Library Board Singapore. We visualized our idea and presented it. The objective was to transform these “Liveable spaces” into “Loveable spaces”.

On 18 June 2022, ParkKaki managed to do our first event, which include:

– Nature Photo Walk

– Storytelling in the Park

– Eco-craft Workshop

Thank God for the nice weather, National Library Board – Choa Chu Kang Library, Secondsguru for all your guidance, NParks for your permit and guidance and Choa Chu Kang Town Council, Nikon Singapore for your camera support, and all our participants for your support as it couldn’t have been done without you guys.

We really hope that from the Nature Photo Walk, all the participants can learn more about CCK Park, see some insects (butterflies, caterpillars and beetles) and fungi and can feel how to be in a Secondary Forest and see Durian on the Tree, Jack fruits.

I hope children have a great experience with the Nikon Z50 camera, enjoyed the Nature Photo Walk and captured some photos and have a lovely family bonding time.
